    Php 5?

Are there any plans to upgrade PHP4 to PHP5?

If not, is it possible for me to compile my own PHP5 in my home dir and use that instead?

I'm having too many problems with PHP4, which doesn't support a huge range of functions (iconv stuff for i18n, etc).

We have php5 servers, and ones that dont are going to get php4 and php5 added to run side by side. Ask to be moved to a php5 server.

I'd like to avoid doing that, i've just been moved to a new server (due to zeus dying), so i dont know if my clients can handle another move.

Is there a time frame for php5 to be installed and run along with php4?

IMHO that may not be possible in near future. Unless everyone one day stops using all old web applications and installs the latest php5 tested versions. They will not survive the upgrade php4->php5.

But yes, we do have plans to start introducing php5 alongwith php4 so they can work independently.

Looking at the problems introduced while moving servers, i can't really afford to move again. Overall the move was smooth, but the problems we encountered had us working 24/7 on our resold domains for a week (re-install all SSL certificates, change IP addresses, etc etc).

So my only hope is for php5 to be installed and run on the server in parallel with php4.

I dont have any interest for mysql5, since mysql4 has all the major features to do proper SQL queries (nested queries comes to mind, one of the most important features introduced in v4).

Is it possible for me to compile and execute my own php version?

Thank you for your answers so far.

Understood, then i'll have to wait for php5 to be installed in parallel with php4.

    Thank you!

I'm happy to hear this. Any ETA on when you'll be starting it?

Ok, I spoke too soon I guess. I have done some tests today and all were successful. So we will start rolling php5.

If you have a few minutes and can provide feedback, please pm me with your server name and I'll add it there first so you can do the testing as well with real web applications.

    I'm also posting a "how-to use php5" in a short while.

p.s. please also note that it will not have any impact on your current installed php applications or php 4 itself. So feel free to pm me with your server name.
