Other than web stuff I do system design and system administration. Perl is my language of choice for fast prototyping. I can glue all the separate parts of a system with Perl, such as talking with databases, creating the GUIs for the back-ends, and writing the web front-end.

When everything is said and done, it is rare when something needs to be compiled (re-written in C for faster performance) and even when it does, Perl happily talks with those sub-systems

PHP is good if all you are doing is web stuff. Everything PHP does Perl can do, even if it is a lot harder. PHP cannot do everything Perl can.

Both of them have thier own benifits, I usually use PHP, if I need to use database, I find it much easy to manage a database, using PHP, but if I need to make a simple redirection script, recommend-it or an e-mail form or a small web pages fatcher, I use CGI, it could do it's job very well.

Eventho, I use PHP, while make a dynamic website, but I still use CGI for my admin section.

But, if you wanna pick one in between these 2, I would say pick PHP.
