Ah!!! I'm being invaded by a rogue Korean web mail server!!! :D

    Well this is sorta humorous...

Since yesterday I am being bonbarded by what seems to be a web mail interface program. it seems that they picked one of my images, and directly linked it from my file space to their web mail background. At least that is what it looks like. Check out this log file:

    http://www.sillypages.com/tempo/log.txt

Now, my gallery images are being served from a database that does check for valid referrers, which means that all they are getting is the "these images are copyrigth Blah blah blah" image instead of what they wanted.

    This is what they want

    http://www.sillypages.com/cgi-bin/db...em=gallery0002

This is what they are getting

    http://bad.sillypages.com/cgi-bin/db...em=gallery0002

bad.sillypages.com is not on my valid referrer list, so after you hit the reload button to clear the original image from your cache, you should see the error image that they are getting.

Anybody here reads korean? If so please do let me know what their site is all about

Thanks Alex. Tried their link to the web admin mail but it didn't work

For what I see on my web logs the hits are coming now from a bulletin board script on their site. I guess people are starting to ask what the heck is going on

I have bandwidth to spare so I'll just let the problem solve itself.

there is another way, to cut them off from your site at all by denying access for this site in .htaccess

Or, here's a really geeky solution: Instead of your generic bad referrer image, test for that server and create one in Korean.

Babelfish has English-to-Korean translation now. If you have the correct character set installed, you could screen capture the result and arrange it to fit in your image area.

Simple messages are easiest to translate, especially considering that machine-translated stuff comes out pretty funky to begin with. I tried "Please do not show my image without my permission. Write to [email protected]." Only the address didn't get translated, so it at least recognized the other words. Clear, concise... and hopefully understandale in bad Korean.

    (edit)
Oh, yeah. Here's the address just in case... http://babelfish.altavista.com/

My Korean isn't what they used to be.

It's a site that's similar to msn or yahoo, with their own IM client, chatrooms, news and whatnot. It looks very disorganized, so I didn't bother looking for the site using your image.

From looking at your log file, though, all of the entries involve same subject. Something about buildings in a city...

So my guess is that it's not the daum site that's ripping your image, but some individual.

If it is one individual, is one hell of a popular one. I'm getting hundreds (maybe thousands) of those hits, not to mention the variety of IP addresses.

As I said, I have the bandwith to spare and it doesn't seem to be a significant hit on server resources. If he doesn't realize that the right image is not loading, I'll email their admin, or block the site altogether.

Replace that image with some nice hard core porn. Unfortunately, according to the Aletia AUP you couldn't do that, but maybe something almost as bad?
