It is installed but only for jpg and png files. You can't do gifs.

I don't think there is anyway to install gif support for gd. It isn't enabled because of some wierd copyright laws. When I use gd for thumnails I just make the thumb nails of gifs png files.

Unisys owns the copyright on the compression algorithm used in GIF compression. A few years ago, they began to crack down on users of it. Basically any software that creates GIFs is supposed to pay some sort of royalties to Unisys or something like that. Since the author of GD couldn't pay this and keep the library free, he removed the GIF support and added the JPG and PNG (as well as XBMP and WBMP, and possibly others that I'm not aware of). The GIF version isn't supposed to be distributed anymore, although its still probably floating around the Internet somewhere.

GD version 2 is now out in Beta. It has some very impressive new features. I can't wait for a stable release! Check it out: http://www.boutell.com/gd/manual2.0.1.html

There's probably some shareware tools out there somewhere, but I can't recommend any. Sorry.

I thought you could do that using 'convert', but i'm not sure how. You could check out these links, the gif2png one works, I just gave it a quick test.
