Mail servers & issues - Read me!

I contacted PWebtech to alert them to the issue. They host about 10 or 12 of Aletia's servers.

Unfortunately PWebtech - which I thanked for talking to me, a non-direct customer - cannot just barge into the servers without Aletia's knowledge. They did mention to me though that yesterday they were in touch with Aletia all day, to resolve issues with Stingray and what other machine broke down.

They will immediately attempt to reach Aletia via the same channels that they have done in the past and yesterday. Aletia has been a customer of theirs for the past 3 years.

If you want to add some pressure - but please be polite, the PWebtech number is 1-888-734-9320

I thought that was necessary but let's try to keep it in one thread

I more geared towards thinking it's a nameserver issue:

    bash$ w

    intothef pts/0 24.190.64.241 3:07pm 3:32 0.03s 0.03s -bash

    timechan pts/1 65.33.120.176 1:49pm 0.00s 0.14s 0.03s w

    vysionar pts/2 infidel.at.drew. Mon10am 22:10m 0.22s 0.22s -bash

    shadeofw pts/4 209.176.7.100 3:16pm 8:48 0.04s 0.04s -bash

See that all new connections show their IP only with no hostname? The only one that shows ("infidel.at.drew...") is connected since Monday and it's therefore cached.

That is the log from my attempt to send mail to myself from another server. It shows that the issue with the mail is a side - effect of failed nameservers (the mail program tries to do a reverse lookup of the recipient's domain and it fails):

    bash-2.04$ telnet
    telnet> o
    (to) timechange.com 25
    Trying 209.123.141.101...
    Connected to timechange.com.

and what do you suppose causes a failed nameserver? Aletia didn't renew something??

    I'm sorry, I'm not completely server-talk saavy.

    Thanks,

    More findings:

Cobra users - which are not with Pwebtech - should have NO problems with email, as I can send email from a Cobra account to external yahoo/hotmail accounts.

The internal DNS is failing to refresh - it's like looking at a blank White Pages phonebook, where the names are listed and there are no phone numbers.

Here's the connection transcript with Cobra, where the mail goes through from a remote server:

    bash-2.04$ telnet

    (to) definingvision.com 25
    Trying 64.119.172.23...
    Connected to definingvision.com.

timechange we did not receive any email from you. What is the ticket number for your request?

The issue is with the Pegasus network and they are having techs work on it.

Dana, can you share with everyone which machines are on the Pegasus network and affected? I'm guessing I got "lucky" and all my domains are affected but I want to make sure in case there is a compound problem here.

The following machines are on the Pegasus network:

    dolphin
    stingray
    cheetah
    scorpion
    puma
    starfish
    hamster

And also some DNS and internal machines. Email to aletia.com has probably been affected as well.

The email issue has just been fixed, so you should now begin getting the email that you had missed earlier that didn't bounce back to the senders.

The unanswered questions is still: Why did it take Aletia so long to discover we were having a problem?
