How to backup a database on my MacBook

I need some advice on how I should backup my MySQL database from my MacBook Pro. I have only done this from my old windows laptop using the putty program which is a program only for windows.

What should I use and how would I do it?

If you have cPanel on your account/server you can use the backup wizard to download backups of your databases.

Is this a reliable and complete method? I want to make sure I am making full and complete backups of my forum database.

-- Also, I can download the database from Cpanel directly to my MacBook right?
